I’m not sure what kind of luck you have to have to be traveling down the road, driving past what looks to be three flag poles and an electrical pole all about five times higher than your car, only to have the lightning decide to strike your moving vehicle but that’s exactly what happened to this couple in Canada.
The couple, Al and Betty Perry, were driving along in Alberta, Canada when the lightning struck their truck driving about 50 mph down the rural highway.
“It sounded like a sonic boom,” Al said. “It was…that’s how loud [it was]. It’s an awful feeling to have,” said Al. “I saw our lives passing before my eyes.”
Inside the truck, airbags deployed, the metal body was rippled by the heat, and then smoke began to fill the cabin, making it difficult for either Al or Betty to see or breathe.
Parts of the truck were completely melted, Al said he believed the electrical system inside the truck was also destroyed, and that made escape the vehicle nearly impossible, he tried for some time to get out, but the doors and windows were locked and would not open.
Luckily for this unlucky couple there was an off duty RCMP officer following not far behind them who came upon the scene almost immediately and helped them escape the vehicle that was quickly filling with smoke.
The couple were checked out by their doctors and given a clean bill of health and then celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary a few days after the event. Talk about a crazy ass story to tell at that anniversary party.
