It took a few minutes for the ghostly image to actually come into focus for me but when it did I too became convinced that Christopher Oakley has uncovered a new, rare photo of Abraham Lincoln making his way through the crowd on his way to deliver his famous address at Gettysburg.
According to amateur historian Christopher Oakley, it very likely is. A photograph taken shortly before the famed Gettysburg Address shows a large crowd waiting for the speech to begin. Over on the far right, near the speaker’s stand, a man in a stovepipe hat is leaning over, looking at the ground. He looks a lot like Lincoln.
I’ve actually been on a big Civil War and Lincoln kick recently so this photograph is exciting for me. I’ve recently finished Shelby Foote’s Civil War trilogy of books as well as Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln. I highly recommend both of them and seeing this photo after reading those and getting insight into this man is truly a fascinating experience.
